The 2006 World Cup, the World Handball Championship the following year, the IAAF World Championships in 2009 and recently the Alpine Ski World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the number of international sports events in Germany in recent years unquestionably high. Officially, such events are the responsibility of the respective associations such as the DFB and the DLV and national organizing committee. In effect, the public sector is heavily involved in the planning, the investment and implementation. Currently, this shows in Munich's bid to host the Olympic Games in 2018. Thus, besides the DOSB the state capital Munich, the Bavarian state, the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Berchtesgaden district are represented as a shareholder of the Bid Committee.
A public commitment that, in the event of the Winter Games cost hundreds of millions to justify in times of tight budgets, should there are reasonable grounds to go out on the prestige of the participating municipalities and politicians involved have. The most important of these should be briefly described below and evaluated.
Positive effects of major sports events
In the sports economics are discussed in three main types of positive monetary effects of the host or the host country of a sports event: These are the consequences of long-term investment in local infrastructure.
Ad: Due to a sports event, the attractiveness of a region under certain circumstances such as a good organization, an attractive program and the necessary luck regarding the weather, not only in the short term. Rather, it is possible that a city or even a whole country can distinguish a holiday area, visitors who arrived for the event originally due to come again and possibly independent of a major sporting event. Events like the FIFA World Cup 2006 are particularly suited to realize such effects, since in this case, the entire country could present itself as a host and also participated in the tournament several locations. Benefits as a sponsor in addition to increasing its visibility as a rule, from an image and brand can transfer between athletes, the host of a sports event achieved similar effects.
Ad: Is it in advance of a major event for the expansion of infrastructure, this may be the respective regions generate long-term benefits. This applies for example to increase capacity at airports, but also for the development of roads and public transport.
The effects mentioned in the economy are not without controversy, and should therefore remain in the present context is not unreflective.
Without question, a sports event attrahiert town guests. In contrast, however, is difficult to be detected number of people who move their travel or does not compete, because they fear a deterioration of their vacation needs. The more important a tournament, the greater will be the number of those who deliberately omitted at the time of discharge on one visit. Even if one starts from a positive net visitor numbers, the multiplier effects are difficult to measure. An example may illustrate this from the restaurant: During the tournament, the local hospitality industry is one additional forces to meet the extraordinary demand. If these seasonal workers from outside the region itself, but coming only for a period of a few weeks is to assume that the multiplier effects will be small, because the additional income stimulate demand for a large part in the home of the seasonal workers will be.
